Real Estate Photography - Blending Flash and Ambient Images in Photoshop

Are you looking to take better real estate photos?  Good real estate photos are essential when trying to sell a home.  In this video, I’ll show you a technique I’ve been using to blend a Flash image with an Ambient image in Photoshop to create a great looking final image.

Its no secret that almost all home buyers begin their search online.  If images of a home are not appealing to the buyers, they quickly move on to the next home.  However, with good real estate photography, there is a better chance that a potential buyer will look at the home online and move to the next step in the process - actually reaching out to a Realtor to see the home.

For this technique, you will need a well exposed image of the room or space using only ambient light.  You will then take the same image using the flash, on camera or off camera, to expose the room.  These two images will then be brought into Photoshop and blended together to create an evenly exposed image that will only require a few minor tweaks to reach the final image.

Of course there is no ‘right way’ to do real estate photography, this is just what has been working for me and I’ve had good results.

How to SWAP heads in PHOTOSHOP

Sometimes not everyone is looking when you take a group photo.  In this video, I’ll show you how easy it is to swap heads on people in a group photo using Adobe Photoshop.  When you are photographing the group, make sure you take several images of the group so that you can capture each person looking at the camera in at least one photo.

Next you will bring all of the photos into Photoshop and use layer masks to replace the heads, face, or entire people in your image.  This is an easy way to make sure that everyone is looking at the camera in your group photos.

6 TIPS for TRAVEL Photography

Tips for travel photography!  If you’re like me, most of my travel photography happens when I’m on a trip or vacation with my family.  Recently I was in Las Vegas and the surrounding area with my wife.  It was our first time there and we were only had 3 days to explore.  On the first day there, we rented a car and saw some of the sights outside of Las Vegas.  It was awesome to see a landscape so different than New Jersey!  The next 2 days were spent in Las Vegas.

Sometimes it’s difficult to get the great photos you want when you’re traveling with others.  I find I have to ‘look’ for photos I want to take very quickly because I don’t want to keep my family or others waiting.  In this video, I’ll give you some tips I use and think about help get better images while you are traveling.

Aperture & F-Stops Explained

Are you looking to get the nice out of focus, blurry background in your images?  Do you need more light for a proper exposure?  Adjusting your aperture will make that possible.  Understanding Aperture and F-Stops will help you take your creativity and photography to the next level.  In this video I’ll explain what F-stops are, how they work and when to use the different F-stops.

I will also show you example images as well as give you a specific way you can practice changing your aperture while allowing the camera to choose your shutter speed.  As you learn how to use the aperture, you will gain an additional skill that brings you one step closer to understanding the exposure triangle, using manual mode on your camera and taking amazing pictures.

Here are some key things to remember about Aperture and F-stops:

  • Aperture controls two things, the amount of light that passes through the lens and Depth of Field
  • Lower apertures, for example 2.8, allow more light to pass thought the lens.  They also allow for a shallower depth of field, giving you the ability to achieve that nice blurry background.
  • Depth of Field (DOF) is simply the area that is in focus within the photograph.
  • High apertures (8 and higher) allow for more or all of your image to be in focus.
  • Higher Apertures also allow LESS light through the lens

Photograpy for Beginners: Understanding ISO through Practice

Learning to understand the exposure triangle basics will help you start out on the right foot in photography.  Once you understand the basic concepts, the only way to get better is to practice.  In my last video ISO Basics, I suggested that you can use the ‘P’ mode on your DSLR Camera to practice using just the ISO.  In this video, I’ll show you the images I made using that method and show you how noise and grain creep into an image as you get into higher ISO settings.

Here are some things to remember about ISO

  • ISO is the sensitivity of the image sensor to light
  • Lower ISO’s (100, 200, 400) are going to give you a cleaner image.  Less Noise/Grain
  • Use low ISO’s in bright environments
  • Higher ISO’s 1600+ are going to have more noise/grain.  Not always a bad thing!
  • Higher ISO’s allow you to photograph in darker situations
  • Higher ISO’s will allow you to use a faster shutter speed (we will get into shutter speed in a future video)

Photography for Beginners: ISO Basics

Looking to learn about ISO?  In Part 1 of this series on the exposure triangle, I’ll teach you about the basics of ISO and show you examples of what  ISO does, how and when to adjust it as well as the effect it will have on your images.  I’ll also tell you how to easily practice using ISO to help you gain a better understanding of how it works and when you should make changes to it based on the environment your photographing in.

Understanding ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed will help you move out of the Auto mode on your camera and into Manual mode.  The benefit to you - Being able to unlock your creativity in photography.

It takes a lot of practice to master photography and your camera.  Getting a good basic understanding of the exposure triangle will give you the tools and knowledge you need to set off on a successful path in photography.

How To Enlarge a Low Resolution Image for Print, Another Way!

Has there ever been a time when you had a low resolution image you want to print?  Maybe it is a screenshot of something or an image where the quality just wasn't there?  In this tutorial I'll show you one way you can modify an image and enlarge it to be printed as an 8x12.  It only takes a few minutes and a couple of steps.

Video Summary

This particular image was at a resolution of 72 ppi and approximately 5.5" x  8.3".  The goal was to modify this image so it could be printed as an 8x10.   When preparing images for print, it’s important to keep in mind that your file resolution should be a minimum of 240 ppi to get a high quality print.  In this case I wanted to use 300 ppi.  I’ll show you how you can easily upscale an image using Photoshop.

Step 1

Open your image, then go to the ‘Image’ menu and select Image Size.

Step 2

In the ‘Width’ and ‘Height’ boxes, input the size you would like your image to be.  In this case, I used 8” x 12”.

Step 3

Look at the resolution box next.  It’s likely you will see something around 72 Pixels/Inch.  Change that to be 300 Pixels/Inch.

Step 4

Next, make sure the box next to ‘Resample’ is checked.  Select ‘Preserve Details (enlargement)’ from the pull down menu.

Step 5

How to Prepare a Scanned Image for Print

Have you ever scanned in an image you wanted to reproduce only to find that the scan does not look as good as you had hoped?  In this tutorial I’ll show you the process I used to scan in an image that was in an old calendar, then retouch and repair the image before sending it off to be printed.  One of the challenges with this image in particular was that after I scanned it in and brought it into Adobe Photoshop, I was able to see the small colored dots of ink that were used to print the image.  I’ll show you how I was able to remove the ink dots using smart filters in Photoshop 2014.  After adjusting the image in Photoshop, I will show you the final printed result.
